EIA - Brief: Initial Considerations for INC 5.2

As delegates prepare to reconvene in Geneva for the resumed fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2) for a Global Plastics Treaty, the INC is entering what should be the final stage.

The decisions made this August will have a legacy for decades, if not centuries, to come. The previous five sessions of the INC have brought challenges, as well as substantial progress, towards crafting an instrument capable of protecting human and environmental health from plastic pollution long into the future.

Success is possible, but it hinges on learning from what has not worked thus far and building on what has – as well as on negotiators willing to be bold, brave and resolute in their commitment to the historic mandate of UNEA resolution 5/14.

In this briefing, EIA outline their final thoughts on the INC process, focusing on the strategic, political and technical considerations for landing an effective deal in Geneva.
