Marine litter – an assessment of sources, controls and progress in Scottish seas
Environmental Standards Scotland published a report investigating the sources of marine litter polluting Scotland’s seas and beaches. The report recommends Scottish Government to take a ‘source-to-sea’ approach when considering future policy, and specifically highlights the need to “implement improvements to the handling and management of plastic pellets”. The report also emphasises, that whilst data remains limited, the most recent assessments indicate that levels of beach litter are worse in Scotland than the rest of the UK, with “919 items found per 100 metres” of shore.
