Fidra - Case study report: Plastic Pellet Pollution from Rail Sources

This case study report examines and highlights the risk of pellet loss from transportation by rail, with a focus on acute spills as a result of freight train derailments, and solutions to address this source of pellet pollution.

The USA is used as a case study to examine the risk of pellet pollution from rail transport due to its extensive rail freight network, the large volumes of plastics transported by rail and multiple documented derailment incidents resulting in plastic pellet loss.

Although the report is focussed on the USA, many of the findings may also be applicable to other countries and regions with freight rail networks and intermodal transport sites
