On May 25th, the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 sank approximately 38 nautical miles off the coast of Kochi on India’s west coast. The sinking initially sparked concerns of oil and hazardous cargo spilling. Approximately, 100 ship containers were initially reported as having been lost, potentially including those containing hazardous materials. Reports of containers and millions of plastic pellets in bags and loose were reported washing up on India's South West coast immediately after this.
